Homework

Collecting
In Year 1 we're learning about seasons. We are collecting things that show us that it's Autumn time. Go find those conkers, acorns, amazing colour leaves, sycamore seeds and anything else that you can find and bring them in to school. We would love to see them!

 Reading

In year 1 we love reading!

We want our children to be reading every day, even if it's only a couple of pages. From 9th September we will send home with the children 1 book at a time in their bookbag. When you have finished that book, jot down a note in their journal and please send in their bookbag and we will change it for a new one. Sometimes the children may bring a book home that they have already read - this is a good thing. The first time your child will read a book, they may spend a lot of time sounding out the letters (segmenting) and then the second time they read it they will be blending their letters to form words. Reading the same book again is fun (we even do it as adults) and it will help them develop fluency and to understand what they are reading.

HR Books - You may have noticed that we have introduced a new reading book (in addition to their regular levelled books) to take home. These are from our class library. They have a sticker on the front with the letters HR on it, standing for Home Reader. Children will be encouraged to choose a book from the library, take it home and read it with you. These books are for you and your family to enjoy together, they are above your child's reading level, so please read it to them and enjoy it together. When you finish the it, send it back and we will give you another one.

If we haven't managed to change the book due to staff availability, please read the same book at home again. You may also wish to subscribe to Oxford Owl for additional free reading material:
