Foundation 2 Class Page
Literacy/Phonics – I’m sure you got lots of wonderful presents for Christmas, but which was your favourite? Can you draw a picture of it and write some simple words to label it? Segment (robot talk) the word first. What sound do you hear at the start of the word? When writing, think of the simple rules. Are you doing good sitting for writing? Are you holding your pencil correctly? Make sure you slow down when writing your words and keep the letters small.
Maths – Capacity. Look in the kitchen for some different sized spoons. How many different sizes did you find? Using the smallest spoon count how many spoons it takes to fill a mug. What happens if you use the largest spoon? How many spoons did it take?
Playing in the snow can make you quite cold. My next challenge for you is to warm up with a bath! Take different sized containers into the bath. Can you fill and empty the containers? Can you show a container that is full, one that is empty and one that is half full.
Topic
Our Topic this term is going to be ‘Once Upon a Time’. Can you make a list of as many Traditional Tales and Fairytales as you can? Ask a grown up to help you with the writing. Which is your favourite story? Why do you like it? Maybe you have this book at home, if not see if you can find it on YouTube. Who is the main character? Where is the story set?
Can you bring the list back into school tomorrow so we can discuss together which stories we want to focus on.
At Dawpool, your child will have their designated class team. However, our Foundation Stage staff work closely as a team, working flexibly between Foundation 1 and Foundation 2. This ensures all staff know all children well and the children gain confidence communicating with a small group of familiar adults.
The Foundation Team are Mrs Poston, Mrs Heron, Mrs Hood, Ms Johnson and Mrs Vickers If you have any questions, worries or concerns, please do speak to any of the Foundation Staff who are ready and able to help you.
During our time in Foundation 2, we will undertake activities linked to all areas of the Early Years Curriculum;
Prime Areas; Communication and Language; Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Physical Development.
Specific Areas; Literacy, Maths, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.
Sessions will also include RE, HeartSmart, No Outsiders, My Happy Mind and Forest Schools.
Activities will be linked to our class topic. We aim to use children’s films and books as a hook for learning to help us find out more about ourselves and the world around us. Throughout the year we will select films based on the interests of the children and that enable us to cover all requirements of the Early Years Curriculum.
We will talk about where the film is set and find out where this country is on a map. We will then the theme of the film as a way of guiding our planning.
PLEASE NOTE
The very nature of the EYFS curriculum enables us to go with the interests of the children. The activities we plan are for a guide only.
We may complete planned activities, adapt planned activities or remove activities from the planning and replace with something more suitable. It is all dependent on how and where the children’s interests take us.
Activities are designed to cover several weeks, if needed.
Reading
Children will be allocated a phonics reading book and a reading for pleasure book each week.
You have access to e-books via the Rocket Phonics website. You will be sent details (via Tapestry) about how to log-in and access these books. These books will link to the phonics sounds being taught in school during that time.
Please let a member of the F2 team know if you have any problems accessing the website.
Every Friday we will send home a library book. Please could we ask for this book to be returned by Wednesday to enable us time to chat to children about what they have read and to change the books over.
You can also download below a recommended reading list for Foundation 2 pupils. These books are widely available from most book sellers.
