Year 1 Class

Welcome to the Year One page!
Please find below details of what we will be covering in our class on a weekly basis. I hope this will help you to chat to your children about what they have learnt in school.
General information
  • Each week P.E. will be on Wednesday, so please ensure your child has a P.E. kit in school. Also if your child has earrings they will need to be removed on these days. If not we will have to cover them with tape for the lesson, if they cannot be removed as yet. Please could the children only wear black plimsolls with non-marking soles.
  • Reading books will be sent home on Friday and will need to be sent back into school on Monday. If they are not returned promptly we will not be able to change them for the next week.
  • We will send homework  home on Friday and this will need to be returned on Wednesday at the latest. This enables us to mark them and if appropriate put in homework for the next week. Homework may not be sent home every week.
  • Please could all the children's belongings be labelled clearly with your child's name, drinks bottles in particular, as often children have identical bottles and do not know which one is theirs.

Week beginning 12th February, 2018

Things to remember this week:

  • Please could children return their menus on Monday. If children do not return their menu, we will assume they want hot dinners.
  • Please return reading packs on Monday and homework books by Wednesday.
  • Please return the permission slips for our trip to Royden park as soon as possible. Children will not be able to go on the trip without them being completed.

We hope you have a lovely Half term holiday and enjoy a much needed rest! The children have worked really hard this half term and are coming on in leaps and bounds! Thank you for your support.

This week we will be learning all about the Chinese culture and learning about Chinese New Year. We will be listening to stories, doing drama, art work, story writing, learning about the geography of China and food tasting. We will be having lots of fun and learning lots of new things!

Numeracy

We will be subtracting by counting back, subtracting ones and then we will be learning about addition and subtraction facts. Eg 8+5=13 5+8=13, 13-8=5,  13-5=8.

P.E.

We will be working with a P.E. specialist and concentrating on games skills.

Week beginning 5th February, 2018

Things to remember this week:

  • Please could children return their menus on Monday. If children do not return their menu, we will assume they want hot dinners.
  • Please return reading packs on Monday and homework by Wednesday.

Literacy

This week we will be continuing to learn how to join our handwriting. The sounds we will be learning this week are ‘ir’ and ‘oy’ and we will be revising ‘ea’ and ‘ie’. We will be learning about compound words-two words that are separate words but together make a new word. E.g. sunflower, windmill, butterfly. We will be playing games and writing our own words. We will be looking at pictures of ‘ir’ and ‘oy’ words and writing words to match them. We will be reading questions and working out three right answers and one wrong answer. Guided reading continues.

Numeracy

We will continue to add and subtract using different methods. We will be adding the units and then tens. We will be counting back from numbers to 100 to subtract. We will be partitioning numbers to subtract. Eg 16-4.  16 becomes 10 and 6, 6-4=2, therefore 16-4=12.  We will also be subtracting from ten instead of ones. Eg 14-8. There are not enough units to subtract 8 from 4 so we must subtract from the 10.  We can then add the remaining units. 14 becomes 10 and 4. Subtract 8 from 10 and leaving 2, then add 2 and 4 to make 6! Sounds confusing but we will be doing this in lots of practical ways first before moving onto recording in our journals!

P.E.

We will be working with a P.E. specialist and concentrating on ball skills.

Science

We will be continuing to learn about plants and planting our own edible plants to eat at a later date. We will be learning the names of wild and garden plants and learning how to identify them.

We will be using the ipads and computers to expore what a plant needs to grow.

History

We will be continuing to learn about the Titanic by creating our own timelines about the events on the night the Titanic sank.

Guided reading continues along with some comprehension work.

Numeracy

We will continue to add and subtract within 20 using different methods. We will be adding by adding the ones first in a two digit number. This will also involve partitioning the number into tens and ones and working with practical apparatus to make ten, then add the ones and tens. We will be journaling our methods and finding out different ways to record.

Science

This week we will be looking at wild flowers and plants that grow locally and in our gardens. We will be learning the names of some of the plants and taking photos of plants so we can compare them later in the year. We will be making a booklet of wild flowers to go in our reading corner. Homework this week will be to complete a fact sheet about a flower in our garden. This will go into our class booklet too.

P.E.

We will be working with a P.E. specialist and concentrating on ball skills.

History

This week I shall be dressing up as a first class passenger on the Titanic. The children will be able to ask me questions about what it was like on the Titanic and what happened on the night it sunk. This will lead into us writing an invitation to ourselves to go on the Titanic when we have a Titanic day. (Letter to follow soon with details.) This activity will also help us to do our long write at the end of the half term, which will be a report about the sinking of the Titanic.

Here are some photos of our trip to St John's church in Meols. We took part in a journey through the Christmas story and played the parts in the story. It was magical and we had a great time finding out what the true meaning of Christmas really is!
Meeting Father Christmas in our Grotto at school and receiving our letters from Father Christmas! It was very exciting!
