We are continuing to encourage mathematical language when solving number problems. This week we are looking at numbers, their value and what happens when we add 1 more. We will be introducing the add/plus (+) symbol and the equals (=) symbol.

Can you say a number up to 10 and add 1 more?

We are continuing to talk about harvest time and have read ‘The Little Red Hen’. This links nicely with harvest as it discusses making bread. It also has strong links with our Fruits of the Spirit element ‘kindness’. This has prompted lots of discussions.

We are continuing to encourage mathematical language to describe a range of 2D shapes. This week we are moving on to look at a variety of repeating patterns. These could be shapes, colours, boy, girl, boy, girl. One of the activities will be to create a repeating pattern using natural materials found in the outdoor area.

This week we will continue our pirate topic. We have introduced envelopes and stamps and the children have been writing letters to pirates and keeping them safe in the treasure chest ready for Mrs Heron to post. I wonder if we will get a letter back from any pirates…..

Last week we were lucky enough to watch the school Harvest assembly which has led onto many discussions about harvest time. This week we will be writing words and drawing pictures that relate to harvest.

Phonics                                              Image result for phonics

We had an excellent first week of phonics last week and look forward to this continuing. The children have amazed me with their enthusiasm towards their writing and reading.

Phonics is a fast process and although there is an order of letters to follow, if the children are not secure we will repeat activities or teach it in a different way before moving on.

 Maths                                                   Image result for maths

Last week we started our guided class teaching of maths. This week we will continuing with this and introducing a smaller group activity which all children will get to complete over the week.

We are continuing to focus on counting, matching one-to-one and recognising numbers. Last week we introduced jumping on a number line and hope to build on this skill this week.

We are counting forwards and backwards, starting from various starting points.

Can you ask an adult to challenge you to hold up a set number of fingers without counting them first?

E.g. adult says 5 and you hold up 5 fingers without counting them.

Last week we had a very busy week starting our new topic ‘Pirates’. The children have been involved in creating their own role play area which they have been acting out their own pirate adventures.

This week we will be talking about what we want to find out about pirates. We will use the internet and books to find out what we what to know.

We will also be looking closely at treasure maps. We will be talking about what symbols are on them and then having a go at creating our own.

W/c 17th September

We have had an amazing first couple of week of school. Children have settled really well into their new routines. I am really proud of how they are all coming into school and are able to sort their own belongings out. We hope children have been telling you the things they have been doing in school and I have loved hearing them tell me what they have enjoyed.

Please don’t forget to write any ‘WOW’ moments down for children to bring into school and share with their friends.

We had our first P.E. session last week which was lots of fun! It took us a while to change into P.E. pumps but we didn’t give up and got there in the end.

Phonics

This week we will be starting phonics. This will just be an introduction into what it is, what we learn and the types of activities we do. Children will be involved in lots of exciting games to enhance letter and sound recognition.  The first letters we will be looking at are – s a t p.

Can children spot any of these whilst reading stories?

Maths

This week we will also be introducing some guided maths activities. We will be focusing on number, counting, number recognition and general problem solving.

What numbers can children spot at home?

We have looked forward to welcoming children into Foundation 2 after the summer holidays.
We hope you have had a great summer and have enjoyed some of the lovely weather.
The first few weeks of coming into school have a big focus on settling in and getting to know the new environment and routines of the day.
Some of these include -
  • finding our pegs and trays
  • toilets
  • classroom/school expectations
  • classroom layout
  • milk and snack
  • playtimes and lunchtimes
  • whole school worship
  • getting ready to go home
Although this sounds like a lot, children always suprise us with how quickly they adapt and pick things up.
