Welcome to Year 5

General Information

  • P.E. will be on Monday and Tuesday afternoon, so please ensure your child has a P.E. kit in school.
  • Literacy homework will be set on a Friday.  Spellings will be set on a Friday.  A spelling test will take place every Thursday.   
  • Maths homework will also be set on Friday and the activity will match to the week’s topic.

Literacy- This week, the children will be creating a message in bottle and writing a letter.

Numeracy- Measuring and estimating area.

Science- Understanding changes that take place in old age.

P.E.- Rounders

History- Creating an art piece looking at how different European artists captured the horror of the war

Literacy- This week, the children will be writing a story in the role of Odysseus after looking at narrative endings.

Numeracy- Reading and writing decimals.

Science- To know when to use sieving, filtering and evaporating to separate mixtures.

Literacy- This week, the children will be holding a debate, sequencing the story and creating a map of places Odysseus has been.

Numeracy- Multiplying fractions by whole numbers.

P.E.- Tennis, hockey, swimming.

Geography- Comparing Ancient Greek Olympic Games and modern Olympic Games.

Literacy- This week, the children will be writing poetry and performing it.  They will also be writing descriptively in the form of a speech.

Numeracy- Adding and subtracting fractions.

Science- Does the temperature of water affect time taken for salt to dissolve?

P.E.- Tennis, hockey, swimming.

Geography- The Battle of Marathon.

Literacy- This week, the children will be creating sea storm pictures, planning and writing a diary entry.

Numeracy- Comparing, ordering fractions and adding fractions.

Science- To know that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution.

P.E.- Tennis, hockey.

Geography- Greek achievements and how they influenced the Western World.

Religious Education- Plan our class assembly.

Week Beginning 23/01/17

Literacy- This week, the children will look at play scripts.  They will turn chapter two into a play scripts and act it out in small groups.

Numeracy- Dividing to make fractions, improper and mixed fractions, equivalent fractions.

Science- Complete our experiment to find the best insulator.

P.E.- Tennis, hockey.

Geography- Greek democracy.

Religious Education- Plan our class assembly.

Music- Classroom Jazz.

Week Beginning 16/01/17

Literacy- This week, the children will complete a role on the wall, plan and write a letter in character as Odysseus.

Numeracy- Finish reading line graphs and start our new chapter on fractions.

Science- Look at thermal insulators and conductors.

P.E.- Tennis, hockey.

Geography- Understand who the Greeks were and about their daily life.

Religious Education- Parable of the Talents.

Literacy- We will start our new book this week! The children will research Greek mythology, create information posters and a role on the wall!

Numeracy- Reading tables and line graphs.

Geography- Start our new topic Ancient Greece.  We will be looking at hoplites.

Religious Education- The Kingdom of God and talents.

Music- Classroom Jazz.

Numeracy- Solving word problems and review 4.

Science- Understand that force and motion can be transferred through mechanical devices.

Literacy- Editing our stories, comprehension and modal verbs.

Numeracy- Chapter 3 review and start chapter 4 (Word Problems).

Science- Air resistance experiment. How does the size of the parachute affect its landing time?

Geography- Filming a documentary all about the rainforest and what we have learnt.

Literacy- We will be looking at narrative openings and writing a story as we finish our book ‘The Varmints’.

Numeracy- Dividing by 10, 100, 1000 and dividing 3/4 digit numbers.

Science- Air resistance.

Geography- Amazon rainforest and its animals.

Religious Education- Gothic architecture and its features.

Music- Continue singing medleys with actions.

Week Beginning 21/11/16

Literacy- We will be drawing protest street art, looking at public campaigns and writing a letter.

Numeracy- Multiplying 2 & 3 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers.

Science- What is friction and how is it created?

P.E.- Dance

Geography- Writing a letter and understanding the importance of the Amazon (continuation).

Religious Education- Discuss artefacts that belong to a Christian church.

Music- Continue singing medleys with actions.

Spanish- Continue exploring the new language.

 

Week Beginning 14/11/16

Literacy- This week, we will focus on poetry inspired by our book and sound clips.  We will also take part in a debate.

Numeracy- Multiplying numbers together using lots of methods.  This could be 1022 x 8, for example.

Science- How does the amount of paper clips affect the time taken for the spinner to fall?  We will be carrying out our experiment. Very exciting!

P.E.- Dance

Geography- Writing a letter and understanding the importance of the Amazon.

Religious Education- School trip to St Bart’s.

Music- Continue singing medleys with actions.

Spanish- Continue exploring the new language.

Literacy- We will be planning our diary entries after looking at the features.

Numeracy- We will be looking at squared and cubed numbers.

Science- Our main objective this week is to plan for our experiment next week.  How does the amount of paper clips affect the time taken for the spinner to fall?

P.E.- Dance

Geography- Conducting a debate about deforestation.

Religious Education- Religious artefacts and their beliefs.

Music- Start learning a Christmas song ‘Bells Ring Out’

Literacy- We will be starting our new book ‘Varmints’.  We will explore definitions, infer character feelings and create freeze frames.

Numeracy- We will be looking at multiples, factors and prime numbers.

Science- Our main objective this week is to explore what forces are and how they affect us.

P.E.- Dance

Geography- Discovering the four layers of the Amazon rainforest and climate conditions.

Religious Education- What is an artefact?

Music- Explore German traditions and learn a song.

Spanish- Continue exploring the new language.

Assessment week

Literacy- Write a book review.

Numeracy- Finding multiples.

Art- Focusing on our values for our reflection area.

Geography- Finish our travel brochures advertising Brazil.

Week Beginning 10/10/16

Literacy- We will be writing a story using ‘The Viewer’ as our stimulus.  Before we write, we will look at how to improve characterisation.

Numeracy- We will be coming to the end of our addition and subtraction topic, focusing on subtracting within 100 000.

Science- Our main objective this week will be to look closely at the question why do we have seasons?

P.E.- Tag rugby and orienteering. 

Geography- Create a collage using Brazilian symbols (Art)

Religious Education- Christian Aid

Music- Continue learning our song for the half term ‘ Don't Stop Believin’ ’.

Spanish- Continue exploring the new language.

 

Week Beginning 03/10/16

Literacy- We will be looking at ‘The Space Between’ creating pictures using pastels and writing a detailed setting description.

Numeracy- In our addition and subtraction topic this week, we will be adding and subtracting within 100,000.

Science- Our main objective this week will be to focus on the question why do we have day and night?

P.E.- Tag rugby and orienteering. 

Geography- Look at trade and economic activity, focusing on tourism.

Religious Education- Christian Aid

Music- Continue learning our song for the half term ‘ Don't Stop Believin’ ’.

Spanish- Continue exploring the new language.

 

Week Beginning 26/9/16

Literacy- The children will be writing a newspaper report focusing on the disappearance of Tristan.

Numeracy- We will move on to our new topic- addition and subtraction.  We will look at adding and subtracting using number discs, number lines and mental/written methods.

Science- Our main objective this week will be to focus on the question why does the Sun appear to move across the sky?

P.E.- Tag rugby and orienteering. 

Geography- Plan a journey from the UK to Brazil and create an itinerary.

Religious Education- Communities- What is a global citizen?

Music- Continue learning our song for the half term ‘ Don't Stop Believin’ ’.

Spanish- Continue exploring the new language.

 

Week Beginning 19/9/16

Literacy- The children will be writing radio report scripts, interviewing their partner and performing this in front of the class.  The children will also be conducting some personal research.

Numeracy- We will continue to make number patterns at the start of the week and then move on to rounding numbers.

Science- Our main objective this week will be to appreciate the distances between the sizes of our Earth, Sun and Moon.

P.E.- Tag rugby and orienteering. 

Geography- Look at the most famous mountainous regions using an atlas, focusing on Brazil.

Religious Education- Communities- shared rules and values.

Music- Continue learning our song for the half term ‘ Don't Stop Believin’ ’.

Spanish- Continue exploring the new language.

 

Week Beginning 12/9/16

Literacy- We will continue with our book ‘The Viewer’.  The children will be creating character profiles, story mapping and will also be doing some drama/role-play. 

Numeracy- We will start looking at comparing numbers and will also be making number patterns.

Science- Our main objective this week will be to learn how the Earth and Moon move around the Sun.

P.E.- Tag rugby and orienteering. 

Geography- Look at the physical features of Brazil.  Would they like to live there? To create a fact file on Brazil.

Religious Education- Communities.
