Year 1 Class

Welcome to the Year One page!
Please find below details of what we will be covering in our class on a weekly basis. I hope this will help you to chat to your children about what they have learnt in school.
General information
  • Each week P.E. will be on Wednesday, so please ensure your child has a P.E. kit in school. Also if your child has earrings they will need to be removed on these days. If not we will have to cover them with tape for the lesson, if they cannot be removed as yet. Please could the children only wear black plimsolls with non-marking soles.
  • Reading books will be sent home on Friday and will need to be sent back into school on Monday. If they are not returned promptly we will not be able to change them for the next week.
  • We will send homework  home on Friday and this will need to be returned on Wednesday at the latest. This enables us to mark them and if appropriate put in homework for the next week. Homework may not be sent home every week.
  • Please could all the children's belongings be labelled clearly with your child's name, drinks bottles in particular, as often children have identical bottles and do not know which one is theirs.

Week beginning: 30th October, 2017

Things to remember this week:

  • Reading books and menus to be returned on Monday please.
  • Parents evening times for next week will be sent home on Tuesday.

Literacy

This week we will be beginning our author study about Julia Donaldson. We will be focusing on The Gruffalo for the next couple of weeks. This week we will be writing our own disgusting recipes for owl ice cream, Gruffalo crumble, roasted fox or scrambled snake! We will be trying to think of words to make our writing more interesting! We will also be writing a recount of what we did in the half term holiday for our assessment piece of writing for last half term. It would help the children if you could chat to them about what they did in the holiday so it is fresh in their minds this week. Our sounds we will be reading and writing this week are 'ow' (as in cow) and 'ear'. We will be playing games to help us remember them. Guided reading will continue.

Numeracy

This week we will be revising and working on addition using whole and part diagrams and recording them in our journals. We will be solving addition problems and devising our own number problems and recording them in our journals using symbols and pictures. We will be using the vocabulary: equation eg (2+3=5), number sentence, equals, equal value. We will be adding using missing numbers eg 3+_=7 and adding by counting on.

Science

Humans and other animals

R.E.

We will continue to learn about the creation story.

History

We will be thinking about our toys and which ones are our favourites and then collecting information from our class members in order to make graph and interpret the information we have collected.

P.E.

We will be continuing with multiskills activities and learning new skills.

On a regular basis we play word bingo in our class. The words are taken from the Year One 100 key words. This is to help us to read, write and spell these words independently. To help you to revise these words at home I thought it would be useful to list the words we have covered in Bingo. Any practise you can do reading, writing and spelling these words would be really beneficial for your child. Thank you.

Set 1.

was, he, to, the, said, and, it, you, in, a, I, of.

Set 2.

For your reference the websites we will be using are www.phonicsplay.co.uk and www.lettersandsounds.co.uk. The sounds are phase 3 sounds and there are free games to play to help with reading nonsense and real words.

In our guided reading groups we will continue to work on expression and some of us will be thinking about punctuation and how it informs how we read a sentence.
Numeracy
We will continue to look at number bonds and different ways of making numbers. We will learn how to record our equations in different ways and use the language associated with addition. ie add, whole, part, sum, equals, makes, is the same as, plus. We will be telling number stories about the equations we have made. For example 3+4=7 I have 3 pieces of cake and my Mum gives me 4 more. How many pieces of cake do i have now? Children will be expected to use practical apparatus to tell the stories and record them in their journals using pictures.

We will continue to learn how to read and spell number names in words to 10/20. We will begin to look at number bonds to 10 and learn how to record them using whole and part diagrams. It would be a great help to the children if you could practise ways of making numbers to 10. For example: 9+1, 8+2 are ways of making 10, 3+4, 5+2 are ways of making 7. It is important that by the end of Year 1, the children have quick recall of these number facts.

Week beginning: 5/9/17
The children have settled into Year One beautifully on their first day! They have been getting used to new routines and learning about the Year One classroom. This week we will be doing some revision on sounds and numbers in preparation for starting Singapore maths and Reading workshop next week. Our History topic this half term is based around the topic of toys. We have also been thinking about what it takes to be a good learner. Ask your children are they a Mindi or a Teezle? These are characters that are helping us to decide which type of learner we are. Do we have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset?
